MEET THE CHARACTERS
All proceeds from this performance will go directly to the Beaver County Humane Society, continuing R-ACT’s tradition of supporting a local charity with every holiday radio show. Many cast and crew members have personal ties to the Humane Society, with several adopting pets from the organization in the past.
Since 1999, R-ACT’s annual holiday radio show has been a cherished tradition in the Beaver County arts community. This one-weekend-only event transports audiences back to the Golden Age of radio with live performances of classic scripts from the 1930s–1950s. “I love the annual R-ACT Holiday radio show; it’s a tradition in Beaver County! I’m thrilled to be able to participate this year—it’s such a fun experience!” said Amy Joseph, a longstanding R-ACT member.
Abby Shaw of Midway makes her R-ACT debut as Alice. She describes the title character as one who “speaks to the great adventurer in us all. She teaches us not to be afraid, to say yes, and to trust and cherish our inner child.” The cast of Alice in Wonderland features Abby alongside six versatile voice actors who portray multiple characters throughout the production. Lisa Germ (Swissvale), Joan Schwartz (Hopewell Twp), Amy Joseph (Monaca), Eric McAnallen (Ellwood City), Tom Abbott (Mars), and Dave Joseph (Monaca) all lend their voice talents to at least two different characters. Joan Schwartz, who voices the Duchess and Gryphon, said, “It is fun to see the different characters take shape with just the voices. The Foley crew adds dimension to the storytelling.”
The live Foley team, consisting of Cyndi Butlerperry, Tammy Van Evera, and Anna McAnallen, will create the practical sound effects that give the performance its distinctive radio theater quality. Director Tim Piper shared his enthusiasm for the hands-on approach: “I wanted Foley and practical effects to be a big part of this radio show. All of our effects are performed live on stage, which brings an authenticity to the production, like you’re in the live studio audience for Lux Radio Theatre or Mercury Theatre on the Air.” Piper especially enjoyed crafting creative sound effects from everyday items. A traditional Foley 'boing box' was created for this production. “The cartoonish hopping sound was perfect for our White Rabbit scenes.” Piper said.
R-ACT guarantees that Alice in Wonderland will deliver plenty of laughs. “This is an incredibly talented cast, and we make each other laugh while still working hard to bring this story to life,” said Schwartz. Piper agreed, “One of the most challenging parts of directing this show was stifling my laughter during rehearsal!”
Don’t miss this whimsical and hilarious production, perfect for audiences of all ages. Share the joy of Alice in Wonderland with your loved ones while supporting the Beaver County Humane Society.
