The Road to the Segriff
The history of R-ACT's performances venues
|
For most of its history, R-ACT has been a vagabond troupe. Like vaudeville actors of yore, R-ACT performed wherever a playing space was available.
At its inception in 1992, R-ACT performed in the Rochester High School auditorium. R-ACT founder, Bob Segriff, was the school's guidance counselor and had made an arrangement with the school district. In 1995 new school officials severed the arrangement with the community theater. Bob Segriff passed away that same year. R-ACT began bouncing from venue to venue, performing at the Rochester Volunteer Fire Department, Armando's, the Blue Violet Cafe, the former Docker's restaurant in Bridgewater, New Brighton High School, and the Community College of Beaver County. They rehearsed and stored their things in the ground floor of Bridgewater's Masonic Building from 1996-2013. In 1999, R-ACT began performing live holiday radio plays every December at the Merrick Art Gallery in New Brighton, PA. They carried on this partnership until 2019 when the Merrick came under new management. The annual holiday radio show continues to this day, now housed at the Segriff Stage. The Venue at Harmony Ridge in Ambridge began hosting R-ACT's interactive Spinnenweber murder mysteries in 2011 and continued hosting until R-ACT made its way back home to Rochester in late 2013. From 2013-2018 R-ACT lived in The Avenue Theater (formerly the Blue Violet Cafe) on Brighton Ave in Rochester. Their office, storage, and rehearsals were housed on the second floor and they performed in the theater on the first floor. R-ACT performed 27 shows at The Avenue Theater before the landlord sold the building and the new owner repurposed the space. After the building was sold to an antique shop, the group begin traveling again in April of 2018. From 2018 to 2020 they performed eight plays on the road in venues like Grace Lutheran Church, Robert Morris University, Rochester High School, the Merrick Art Gallery in New Brighton, and the Rochester Borough Theater (now named the Sandy Reigel Theater). During this time they partnered with Brighton First to renovate a space further down the street on Brighton Avenue that would eventually become the Segriff Stage. R-ACT's stage was dark for 2020 and 2021 due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. When R-ACT returned in July 2022, they performed in their new permanent home, the Segriff Stage on Brighton Avenue. One month after the Segriff's inaugural production, the former Avenue Theater caught fire and had to be demolished. 2026 will mark R-ACT's fifth (5th) season at the Segriff Stage. |
