HISTORY OF R-ACT'S MURDER MYSTERIES
Since 2009, R-ACT Theatre Productions has been proud to present the Spinnenweber Murder Mysteries, a beloved series of original, interactive murder mystery comedies written by local school teacher and long-time R-ACT member, Larry Spinnenweber. Over the years, R-ACT has produced 20 of these entertaining whodunits, which have become a staple of our community theater experience.
The Spinnenweber Murder Mysteries are interactive, audience participation, theatrical experiences where you play a pivotal role in solving the crime. Each show features a cast of 8-9 characters, typically including one murder victim, an interrogator/investigator, and a variety of suspects. Occasionally, the interrogator is also among the suspects.
These plays are known for their humor, featuring fun, trope-filled characters and a delightfully campy tone. Many of the mysteries are spoofs or parodies of popular movies, television shows, or genres. While these productions are always referred to as "murder mysteries," the central crime isn't always a murder. Sometimes the plot revolves around a kidnapping, robbery, or act of sabotage. However, there is always a crime to solve and a criminal to catch.
Whether you’re an avid mystery solver or just along for the laughs and fun, the Spinnenweber Murder Mysteries offer an engaging and entertaining evening for all.

AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION
|
What Does "Interactive" Mean?
"Interactive" in the context of the Spinnenweber Murder Mysteries refers to the audience’s opportunity to actively participate during the designated interrogation segment between Act 1 and intermission. Audience members may choose to question suspects to uncover clues that could help identify the murderer. This participation is entirely optional—you can just sit back and enjoy the show from start to finish without engaging directly. No one will be required to leave their seat, play a character (unless you’ve agreed to be an audience plant beforehand), or interact with other audience members to solve the mystery. Audience Plants: Some productions include an "audience plant"—a person/s posing as an audience member who is actually part of the show. These plants are typically other R-ACT members who aren’t part of the main cast and are chosen ahead of time. On rare occasions, an audience member may be asked (discreetly, before the show begins) if they’d like to participate. If asked, you’ll be provided with a script or a slip of paper containing your lines and cues. You might be asked to speak from your seat or briefly go onstage. Participation is always voluntary, and you’re welcome to decline. |

Who could have performed such a crime, a crime that would keep England’s king a captive when she needs him most? Was it his hypochondriac brother, Prince John, who wants the throne of England for himself? Was it Robin of Loxley, the dashing outlaw known as Robin Hood, who may want more power for himself? Could it be Robin’s right hand man, Little John, who is tired of living in Robin Hood’s shadow and wants to turn the spotlight on himself? Maybe it was Wilma Scarlet, Merry Woman and medieval feminist who wants more rights for women? Or was it the Lady Marion Fitwalter, King Richard’s ward and a woman who is tired of having decisions made for her? Perhaps it was Maid Marion’s gentlewoman, the Lady Audrey, a woman who collects secrets as some people collect stamps? Could it have been Eleanor of Aquitaine, the powerful Queen Mother who loves her power? Might it be the fat Franciscan, Friar Tuck, a man for whom sarcasm is a vocation? And who is the mysterious man wearing the red cross of a Crusader? It’s up to Sister Agatha of Christie Abbey to separate fact from legend and solve the crime.
